Costa Rica

Costa Rica holds the record as the most democratic of the Central and South American Countries. Costa Rica does not maintain a formal military establishment and has never had a military conflict. It is as close to a classless society as can be found in Latin America. Costa Rica is a relatively poor country; however, it has proportionately few desperately poor and even fewer fabulously wealthy citizens. Social mobility is possible and commonplace. This minimizes class bitterness and resentment.

The people are for the most part Spanish-speaking European descendants, though some African descendants reside primarily along the Caribbean Coast. A small number of Indians live primarily in their own enclaves. The capital San Jose, elevation 4000 feet and the only major city, is a relatively modern European type city. San Jose enjoys a very pleasant climate all year.

A low mountain range divides the country with low coastal plains to the east and west. Costa Rica's high annual rainfall yields lush green growth everywhere. The climate is moderate due to the presence of the mountains and the fact no point in the country is more than fifty miles from the ocean. Coffee, sugar, and bananas are the principal exports of Costa Rica, though most tropical fruits are cultivated for local consumption. No major mineral deposits have been found, which results in the economic drain of importing petroleum and iron products.

The natural beauty of Costa Rica, the friendly demeanor of the people, and the pleasant climate bring eager travelers. Tourism has become a major and growing industry.
